SSAA gains assurances from Minister as NFA consultation kicks off

The SSAA had a seat at the table of two important meetings this week to discuss the review of the National Firearms Agreement (NFA) and to make sure our concerns regarding the current state of play and any future changes are heard.

Held in Sydney on August 26, the first meeting saw SSAA National President Geoff Jones and CEO Tim Bannister meet with the Firearms and Weapons Policy Working Group (FWPWG). Other shooting and hunting associations along with representatives from the firearms industry were also present.

The second meeting saw Geoff and a select number of other stakeholders meet with Justice Minister Michael Keenan face-to-face. The SSAA can report that the Minister did give us a number of assurances while making it clear that the states are also key players in the review.

The dialogue was positive and we are currently working on a preliminary submission addressing a number of concerns regarding the NFA, in the scope of what is being considered.

In the meantime, we encourage you to continue writing to your local member to make sure our cause is being heard. We will bring you updates as they come to hand.
