Our national organisation, the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia, is seeking an enthusiastic and capable Media and Political Liaison Officer to help with our political and media activities and relationships.

Reporting to the CEO/Chief Editor and Chief of Staff, the Media and Political Liaison Officer will research, write, and manage stories and press releases, e-newsletters and assist with video production and content. Public relations work will be required, as will lobbying trips to Canberra. Other interstate travel may be required.

Previous experience working in a political and/or media environment will be highly regarded. Social media experience is also desirable.

An open mind to a unique industry and recreation enjoyed by almost one million Australians is essential.

The role is full-time, with a salary plus super commensurate with the applicant's skills and experience.

Job Description

Title: Media and Political Liaison Officer

Location: Adelaide

Responsible to: SSAA CEO and Chief of Staff

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Status: Permanent fulltime

The Media and Political Liaison Officer of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia Inc. is responsible for expanding the work of the SSAA’s media and publications, with a particular focus on its political involvement. SSAA works with political parties from all spectrums for the benefit of its 190,000-plus members.

The position involves writing copy for any and all of the department’s publications, videos, press release drafts as well as assisting with photography and other media-related duties and media special projects.

The Media and Political Liaison Officer will be directly responsible to the SSAA CEO/Chief Editor and Chief of Staff.

Specific duties:

  • Monitor media coverage related to the firearms industry, sports shooting and hunting through email alerts, traditional news services and social media monitoring platforms.
  • Source and write stories for the member publications, websites, e-newsletters and social media.
  • Write and distribute press releases and field all media calls.
  • Liaise with politicians regarding any legislative changes or political issues.
  • Liaise with state branches when required.
  • Attend and cover a range of events across Australia as required.
  • Research and write submissions, Freedom of Information requests, complaints to media publications, information requests to government bodies and correspondence with ministers.
  • Monitor political situations nationally and in each state.
  • Assist with video production.
