Day 2 wrap-up at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Daniel Repacholi strode centre stage on day two of the shooting when he snapped the gold medal for Australia at the Barry Buddon Shooting Range in the 10m Air Pistol event. Repacholi tallied 199.5 points, holding off Prakash Nanjappa of India, who took the silver medal with 198.2. Bronze went to 60-year-old Englishman Michael Gault with 176.5. Gault, a grandfather at his sixth Games, equalled the record for Commonwealth medals in any sport by clocking up an 18th podium place. Repacholi, the burly shooter from Nulkaba in the New South Wales Hunter region, held his nerve to defeat Nanjappa by 1.3 points in the 20-shot, eight-man elimination final. The result secured Repacholi’s second Commonwealth Games gold after victory in Melbourne and bronze in Delhi. The other Aussie, Blake Blackburn, bowed out after finishing in 14th spot.

In the women’s 10m Air Pistol event, Australia’s Lalita Yauhleuskaya had to settle for fourth place with 157.7 points, behind winner Shun Xie Teo of Singapore on 198.6 points. Malaika Goel from India won the silver medal with 197.1 points, and Canada’s Dorothy Ludwig took bronze with 177.2. Australia’s Emily Esposto finished as an 11th-placed qualifier.

Australia’s standing on the medal table was given a further boost when Lalita Yauhleuskaya carried off bronze in the women’s 25m Pistol event. The 50-year-old from Melbourne beat Malaysia’s Alia Suzana Azahari 10-8 in the shoot-off for third place. India’s strength as a shooting power was evident when Rahi Sarnobat won gold and Anisa Sayyed silver in the event. Australia’s Hayley Chapman went out in the second qualifying stage after coming sixth.
