Sea to Summit sleeping systems offer hunters outback comforts

For hunters out and about on overnight treks in harsh surroundings, a sound night’s sleep can make the task of surviving a demanding mission more comfortable. Nobody knows this better than Australian outdoors retailer Sea to Summit, which has turned out specialised sleeping bags that adventurers encamped in the outback can rely on. The firm was co-founded by mountaineer and author Tim Macartney-Snape, who has vast experience of the rigours of coping in the wilderness. Tim was the first Australian, along with Greg Mortimer, to conquer Mount Everest in 1984.

Sea to Summit enjoys a glowing reputation around the globe for the excellence of its products and has recently added four new commodities to complement its array of down and synthetic sleeping bags.

Tim explained his philosophy about gearing up for adventures in testing settings and how Sea to Summit items are designed to ease the load. “We venture into the wild to get away from it all,” said Tim. “Active days, fresh air, inspiring scenery and long cosy nights. But it’s only good if you’re warm and comfortable.”

First off the rack of the new Sea to Summit arrivals is the Ember quilt. This provides the perfect balance of size and weight for ultra lightweight hiking or even adding an extra layer of warmth to an existing sleeping bag. With multiple configurations to choose from, the Ember quilts use 15D shell and lining fabrics and are filled with 750+ loft ultra-dry down. Lengths are regular or large with recommended retail prices from $299.

The Latitude sleeping bag is the most versatile in the Sea to Summit wardrobe. It is designed for a broad selection of activities in a variety of environments, filled with 750+ loft ultra-dry down and protected by 2D NanoShell fabric. Featuring a tapered rectangular shape, the Latitude series offers comfort in the widest scale of temperatures. The length options are short (right zip), regular (left or right zip) and long (left zip) with recommended retail pricing starting at $479.

The Voyager sleeping bag is a technical synthetic series catering for adverse wet conditions. It takes the versatile ‘relaxed mummy’ convertible shape and replaces the down with an advanced soft and compressible Thermolite hollow fibre insulation. The bag features an oversized neck-collar and hood-seal to keep out drafts. The length/zip variables are regular (left or right zip) and long (left zip) with recommended retail prices from $299.

Operating as more than just a sleeping bag is the Basecamp alternative. The dual zipper design allows it to transform from an extensive sleeping bag into a svelte summer quilt. It integrates with Air Sprung Cell sleeping mats and aeros pillows to create a wonderfully customised sleep system. It is ideal for hunters involved in snow-covered zones and multi-day base camp operations. Regular and large varieties both have full-length dial zips, with recommended retail prices from $449.

Again, Tim can bring his depth of outdoor acumen to bolster the Sea to Summit brand. “In almost four decades of skiing and mountaineering I’ve slept outdoors more times than I can remember,” he said. “I’ve owned many different sleeping bags but I’ve never been entirely happy with any of them, they’ve always suffered a few inadequacies, some of which over time have really annoyed me - like snagging zips, poorly fitted hoods, cold spots, day-to-day growing dampness and difficult drawcords...So for a long time at Sea to Summit we have thought about this most basic outdoor necessity and wondered how, by using new materials and a fresh take on design, we could come up with a range of bags that eliminated those problems and delivered much better performance. Now at last I can confidently say we have done that.”
