In Summary of University of Queensland Hunter Survey, the Deer Research Group at The University of Queensland posts a range of responses to a survey it carried out on 8000 hunters throughout Australia in 2012. The majority of the respondents were from the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia, with 58.3 per cent (4429) claiming membership.

When the question was put to the hunters: How many years of experience do you have in hunting, 65 per cent replied they had more than 20 years. However, 885 opted to simply skip the query. Interestingly, 56.5 per cent of those surveyed said they were introduced to hunting by their families. A total of 88.4 per cent said they gleaned information on hunting from magazines, while 78.9 per cent kept up to date via websites.

Out of 53 questions posed in the survey, was one about which species of animal would you hunt in Australia if you had the opportunity? The top response was pigs with 78.4 per cent, then goats with 74.6 per cent, followed by foxes with 74.1. Pheasants were bottom of the poll with 34.6 per cent.
