Tasmanian farmers want to be able to harvest wild deer on their properties for meat.
Hunters kill thousands of the animal every year, and would rather see the resource protected for recreational use. The wild deer cause damage to agricultural crops, orchards, fencing and forestry seedlings.
The Department of Primary Industries believe there are up to 25,000 in Tasmania. It is currently legal to harvest other animals, like possums and wallabies, for meat.
Tasmanian Environment Minister Matthew Groom says he would not support a proposal that causes a divide between land managers and hunters.
