Consultation continues under new Minister

With more than a dozen trips to Canberra, numerous meetings in electorate offices across the country and other high-level discussions under way, 2018 has been a busy year for the SSAA Legislative Action team so far. This included a one-on-one meeting with the new federal Minister responsible for firearms, Angus Taylor MP.

In our recent meeting with Law Enforcement and Cybersecurity Minister Taylor, where we discussed a number of pressing issues relevant to our 188,000-plus members, we were pleased to confirm the consultative firearms end-user and industry group will continue under his Ministry.

The Firearms Industry Reference Group (FIRG) was formed by the Coalition government following the 2013 election, after the SSAA sought assurances from both parties that a formal consultation process would be established.

The SSAA looks forward to continuing discussions with the Coalition under Minister Taylor, as we continue to demonstrate how the current regulatory environment has had many unintended consequences for legitimate sporting shooters and hunters, for no public safety benefit.
