No gaol time for Tassie man trafficking guns

A Tasmanian man found guilty of possessing and trafficking an unregistered .22 self-loading rifle and a .22 revolver, along with the drug ice, will not serve any gaol time. The Examiner reports that Justin Lee Clark, 41, has instead been fined $1000 fine and must not commit any offences for two years to avoid gaol.

In another case of eyebrow-raising sentencing, the penalty appears to cast doubt on the Federal Government’s claim that those caught with unregistered firearms face a fine of up to $280,000, or up to 14 years in gaol. This warning is part of the advertising campaign for the ongoing firearms amnesty.
